What Is the Quran? Meaning, History and Importance in Islam

The Quran is the holy book of Islam and the central guidance for more than 1.9 billion Muslims. Muslims believe it is the word of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), not written by him.

What does the word Quran mean?

Quran comes from the Arabic root qara’a — to read or recite. Recitation (tilawah) is central: Muslims recite it in five daily prayers, learn tajweed rules, and many memorize the whole book (hafiz / hafiza).

How is the Quran organized?

• 114 surahs (chapters), varying from a few verses to hundreds.
• Ayahs (verses) — the individual units.
• 30 juz (parts) — so the whole Quran can be completed in Ramadan, one juz per day.
• First surah: Al-Fatiha (The Opening). Last: An-Nas (Mankind).

It is not ordered chronologically but by divine arrangement, combining belief, worship, law, stories and morals.

Brief history of revelation

Revelation began in the Cave of Hira near Makkah when Muhammad was 40. Verses came gradually over 23 years — Makki verses focus on faith, One God, afterlife; Madani verses on community, prayer, fasting, charity, family and justice. Companions memorized and wrote it; under Abu Bakr it was compiled, under Uthman standardized into one text used worldwide today.

What does the Quran teach?

Belief in One God (Allah), prayer, charity, fasting, honesty, patience, forgiveness, justice, care for parents, neighbours and the poor, accountability on the Day of Judgment, and stories of prophets like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Mary and Jesus (peace be upon them) as lessons.
