Muslims believe the Quran is revelation (wahy) from Allah, not the Prophet’s composition. Angel Jibril brought verses over 23 years; the Prophet recited, companions memorized and scribes wrote on parchment, bones and leaves.
The Prophet himself was unlettered (ummi), which Muslims see as proof the eloquent text is divine.
Human role: preservation
- During life: dozens of scribes (e.g. Zaid ibn Thabit), plus mass memorization.
- After death: under Caliph Abu Bakr, scattered sheets gathered into one manuscript after Yamama.
- Under Uthman: copies made and sent to regions to prevent dialect disputes — the Uthmani mushaf used worldwide today.
