Surah Al-Fatiha in Arabic, Transliteration and English Meaning

Surah Al-Fatiha, The Opening, is the first chapter of the Quran and the most recited passage in Islam.

Surah Al-Fatiha in Arabic

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ، مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ، إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ، اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ، صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ

Transliteration

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim. Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil alamin. Ar-Rahmanir Rahim. Maliki yawmid-din. Iyyaka nabudu wa iyyaka nastain. Ihdinas siratal mustaqim. Siratal ladhina anamta alayhim, ghayril maghdubi alayhim wa lad-dallin.

English Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us on the Straight Path — the path of those You blessed, not of those who earned anger nor of those who went astray.

Why it matters

It summarizes the whole Quran: praise, mercy, accountability, worship and dua for guidance. The Prophet called it Umm al-Kitab (Mother of the Book).

Recite slowly in prayer, pausing after each verse, reflecting on asking Allah for guidance every day.
