After Musa, the Israelites demanded a king to fight the occupiers of the holy land. Allah appointed Talut — not rich, but chosen for knowledge and physique — and gave the sign of his kingship: the Ark of the Covenant returning, borne by angels (2:246–248). The people objected to his poverty; Allah answered that kingship is His gift, not wealth’s inheritance.
Marching out, Talut tested his thousands at a river: drink your fill and you are not of me — a sip at most. All but a few hundred failed (2:249). Facing Jalut’s (Goliath’s) vast host, even the survivors despaired: no power have we today. But the faithful among them replied with the dua of the outnumbered — pour patience upon us, make our feet firm (2:250).
Jalut, clad in bronze, challenged Israel to single combat. None stepped forward — except a youth named Dawud, who refused armour and kingly sword, taking only his staff, his sling and five smooth stones, in Allah’s name (2:251).
One stone flew true, striking the giant’s forehead; Jalut crashed down, and Dawud finished him. The enemy routed — “so they defeated them by Allah’s leave, and Dawud killed Jalut” (2:251). A shepherd boy’s trust had toppled an empire’s champion.
Allah then granted Dawud kingship and wisdom, taught him armour-craft, softened iron in his hands, and revealed the Zabur (Psalms), with mountains and birds echoing his praise (2:251, 34:10, 38:17–20). The sling of faith became a throne of justice.
