Nuh — The Ark and the Flood

Nuh called his people for nine and a half centuries — “he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty” (29:14). He preached by night and day, in public and in secret, promising forgiveness and rain, wealth and children to whoever repented (71:5–12). The chiefs answered with mockery, demanding he bring the punishment he threatened if he was truthful (11:32). Only a few believed — mostly the poor and weak, whom the elite despised (11:27).

When Allah decreed the matter settled, He commanded Nuh: build the ark under Our watch and inspiration — and do not plead for the wrongdoers (11:36–37). As he built on dry land, the chiefs passed and laughed. “If you laugh at us, we will laugh at you,” he answered, “you will soon know” (11:38–39). Into it he loaded pairs of every creature and his believing household — except those already condemned (11:40).

Then the oven gushed forth — springs burst from the earth and the skies poured (11:40, 54:11–12). The ark sailed amid waves like mountains. From the deck Nuh spotted his son stranded apart and cried: my son, embark with us — do not stay with the disbelievers. The son trusted a mountain instead: it will protect me from the water. Nuh warned that nothing protects today — and the waves closed between them (11:42–43).

Watching his son drown, Nuh pleaded: my Lord, my son is of my family, and Your promise is true (11:45). The answer corrected even a prophet: he is not of your family — his deed was unrighteous — and warned him never to ask of what he has no knowledge. Nuh repented instantly with the dua of the humbled (11:46–47).

When the water subsided, the command came: O earth, swallow your water; O sky, withhold — and the ark settled on Mount Judi (11:44, 48). Nuh disembarked with blessings, forefather of a believing remnant — the second Adam of mankind.
